Day Three: Strengthening Safe, Patient-Centred Surgical Care Through Global Collaboration.

Day Three of the Humanitarian Surgical Camp at WADADIA–Habibat Hospital began with a comprehensive morning briefing attended by visiting volunteer surgeons Dr. Rachel Pope and Lindsay Furgeons, alongside a team of biomedical engineers from Johnson & Johnson led by Peter Fate. Together with WADADIA’s local multidisciplinary team, they reviewed post-operative outcomes, assessed patient progress, discussed surgical complexities and aligned on the day’s procedures.

These briefings are critical to ensuring clinical precision, risk mitigation and coordinated care delivery. They form the backbone of safe surgery.

Our Founder and Lead Director, Habiba, joined the session to thank the international and local teams for their dedication and emphasised a foundational value: patient safety and wellbeing must guide every decision — from planning to discharge.

Beyond the briefing room, she observed theatre procedures to reinforce quality assurance standards and ensure adherence to safety protocols. Leadership presence in clinical spaces signals accountability, transparency and institutional integrity.

Equally important were her one-on-one and group sessions with women recovering from surgery. These engagements serve a powerful purpose:

  • Reducing post-operative anxiety
  • Reinforcing trust in the care process
  • Providing reassurance and emotional validation
  • Supporting psychosocial recovery alongside physical healing

For women who have often endured years of stigma and isolation due to obstetric fistula and childbirth injuries, being seen and heard by leadership restores dignity and strengthens confidence in their healing journey.

As we conclude Day Three, WADADIA remains committed to delivering safe, high-quality, woman-centred surgical care strengthened by international partnership and local expertise.

Our doors remain open to women battling obstetric fistula and childbirth injuries. Through collaboration, excellence and compassion, we continue restoring health, dignity and opportunity.
