From Silent Suffering to Strength: Zubeda’s Journey of Dignity and Renewal

At 38, Zubeda Nasiri never imagined she would be starting life afresh — but here she is, stronger than she ever thought possible.

Her life changed forever after the birth of her first child. What should have been a joyful occasion turned into years of silent pain. During labor, complications arose. By the time her baby arrived, Zubeda realized she could no longer control her urine.

At first, she thought it would pass. But days turned into weeks, then months. The smell, the stigma, and the isolation broke her spirit. She didn’t know she was living with obstetric fistula — or that help existed.

Her breakthrough came when she met another survivor who introduced her to WADADIA. Through our referral program, Zubeda received surgery at Bomu Hospital. When she woke up and realized she was dry again, she cried tears of relief — a second chance at life.

But healing is more than surgery. Through WADADIA’s Reintegration Program, Zubeda received ongoing psychosocial counseling and joined a supportive survivor group. Later, she completed vocational and entrepreneurship training through our partnership with SOMO.

Today, she proudly runs her own business — selling clothes, shoes, gas refills, water, and M-Pesa services. Her shop is a symbol of strength, independence, and rebirth.

“They gave me my life back,” she says. “May they continue helping more women like me.”
