💔 Her Dignity Restored: The Story of an 8-Year-Old Girl from East Pokot
At just 8 years old, Grace’s childhood was shattered by tragedy.
In the rugged, dry hills of East Pokot, she set out early one morning to collect firewood,a daily task for many girls in her village. In her search for dry branches, she climbed a tree. She never imagined that a single fall would change her life forever.
Grace landed on a sharp branch, suffering a traumatic tear between her vagina and rectum a devastating injury that left her unable to control both urine and stool.
Too young to understand what had happened to her, Grace withdrew into silence and shame. In remote communities like hers, girls often live far from hospitals, and such injuries are mistaken for curses or punishment.
But a local community leader, aware of WADADIA’s outreach work, reached out to our Regional Officer for help. Within hours, our team mobilized, linking Grace to specialized treatment at Gynocare, Eldoret, one of our partner health facilities.
Today, Grace is receiving medical care, counseling, and hope through WADADIA’s Her Dignity Program a holistic initiative that restores the health, confidence, and future of girls and women suffering from childbirth and traumatic injuries.
Her story is a heartbreaking reminder of the realities faced by girls in Kenya’s most remote villages where poverty, inaccessibility, and unsafe living conditions put their lives and futures at risk daily.
But together, we can change this.
Through Her Dignity, WADADIA continues to reach women and girls in rural and hard-to-reach areas restoring health, dignity, and dreams.
